Pearls of Wisdom
Updated: Aug 7, 2019
Imagine yourself an oyster, with a niggling, irritating piece of sand, not knowing exactly what it is, but it is rough, raw, and irritating to the sensitive parts of you. Instead of removing the grain of sand, you begin to coat it with a little a bit of mother of pearl, hoping that will alleviate the pain This hides the irritant making it smoother, a bit more tolerable, but only for a while. However over time it feels a bit heavier and its pressure now weighs on you, so you coat it again and again with more mother of pearl. The bigger the pearl gets, the heavier it weighs, and becomes a burden for you. This creates a never ending cycle of pleasure and pain, while hiding the root of the discomfort.
What if our personality was formed around a particular challenge, a grain of sand and irritant, something that is unconscious to you. Yet unconsciously from birth, you have been building up layers covering it over with unconscious behaviours. The pearl is now your personality, the parts people see, or the parts we want people to see. When we step back and look at the entire organism we see the pearl is a small part within the organism and not the entire thing. Looking at this metaphor, we can say our personality is within us, we are not our personality.
Using the pearls as a metaphor helps us to assimilate the vast knowledge, and to deepen and understand the wisdom of the enneagram. The enneagram is a multidimensional framework for psychological and spiritual health. It is a map which compassionately guides us to deepen self-understanding, becoming more conscious and choosing options that would create a more joyful and fulfilling life.
What if you could uncover this irritant, become conscious of what causes your pain? What brings you pleasure? Your weaknesses ? Your strengths? Your unconscious motivations? The lens through which you view life? How would this information be of benefit to your work, your career, your relationships, your life?
Pearls are timeless heirlooms that can be passed down from generation to generation. Your pearls can stay in your family for generations to come. How does your personality affect you...those around you.... in your family, your friendships, your job. How important are your relationships, your communication, your influences? What gifts would you like to share? What would be your legacy?
